Benefits of Honeysuckle on Scalp & Hair

Part of the Caprifoliaceae family, honeysuckle (also known as woodbine) is an amazingly hardy plant that usually takes shape as a climbing vine, but sometimes as a shrub. Most types of honeysuckle have cream, white, or pink ornamental flowers that boast a sweet fragrance with notes of jasmine and vanilla. Blooming in spring and summer, these tubular blooms contain nectar that hummingbirds, bees and butterflies are drawn to. In autumn, berries replace flowers. Ranging from round to slightly cylindrical, the berries can be red, orange, pink or blue. Some of the fruits are toxic, but the honeysuckle’s flowers have been used for centuries as traditional medicines and herbal remedies because of their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. There are more than 150 species of honeysuckle, two of which we use in our Styling Gel. 

What is honeysuckle flower extract? 

Derived from the flowers and stems of the honeysuckle plant, honeysuckle extract can be derived through various methods – from steaming to boiling or cold-pressing. Pale yellow to golden in colour, honeysuckle extract has a subtle floral scent.  

How is Hårklinikken’s honeysuckle flower extract different? 

At Hårklinikken, we blend the flowers of two types of honeysuckle: Lonicera Caprifolium (an Italian species) and Lonicera Japonica (a Japanese species) for our Styling Gel. We process them through a two-phase extraction method to help preserve the phytoactives – plant compounds that contain various benefits for scalp and hair. This meticulous process yields a light and smooth extract that doesn’t leave a greasy or heavy residue.  

How does honeysuckle flower extract benefit scalp and hair? 

Our honeysuckle flower extract contains a rich concentration of antioxidants in the form of flavonoids, phenolic acids and saponins, which can help defend hair against environmental stressors and aid in the reduction of damage that leads to dullness, dryness and breakage. Natural sugars within the extract support hydration and softness. Honeysuckle extract also contains antimicrobial and soothing properties which can help to maintain scalp balance – should the product come into contact with the scalp.
